Figures on emigration of Jews from Austria which were contained in a Vienna dispatch of the Havas News Agency, published in JTA NEWS of July 23, were clarified today by the statistical department of the Joint Distribution Committee. The assertion in the dispatch that 99,672 Jews left Austria in the past six months is incorrect, it was pointed out. In reality, a total of about 98,000 left in the whole period between March, 1938, the date of annexation of Austria, and May 30, 1939, of whom 36,264 were assisted to emigrate by the Jewish Kultusgemeinde (community organization).
