The extent to which Jewish life in this city now centers around the Jewish community was stressed here today in an address by Moritz Rosenthal, member of the community executive body, who addressed a meeting in the Prince Regenstrasse Synagogue.
“We have ruthlessly put aside everything that does not belong to the immediate order of the day,” Herr Rosenthal declared. “We have opened an economic office of the community and taken over the emigration office of the Hilfsverein. We have built up a loan system for the middle classes and enlarged our welfare bureau.
“Our welfare office has 20,000 clients; the schools of the community are attended by 4,000 children, and 36,000 patients are treated in our community institutions. There are 800 in our homes for the aged and the 4,000 school children are taken care of in our Summer camps.
“Our work makes it essential that we deal in every-day necessities and we have not allowed ourselves to be led away by high-sounding phrases. Last Winter we gave economic relief to our people. This coming Winter we must not only give bread but spiritual relief as well.”
