New York’s film critics greeted with rave reviews today the first general showing of “The Shop On Main Street,” a Czech-made film about Slovak-Jewish relations in a Slovak town under the Nazis.
The Times called it “one of the most arresting and devastating pictures” from Europe “or anywhere else in several years.” The review called the performance by Ida Kaminska, the celebrated Polish Yiddish actress,”a wondrous image of Old World innocence.” The Herald Tribune said the film was “brilliant in performance and extraordinary in accomplishment.” The World Telegram and Sun declared that “the small Czech film industry has quietly hatched a masterpiece.”
