In connection with the impending trial of Zelea Codreanu, who faces charges of inciting to riot through the anti-Semitic agitation of his followers, it was established today that the anti-Semitic manifestos distributed by the Iron Guard organization and signed by Codreanu were printed in the plant of the Bucharest anti-Jewish daily “Universul,” whose editor, Stelian Popescu, was minister of justice in the last Liberal cabinet.

This discovery is interpreted here as being evidence that the Liberals are also taking a hand in the anti-Semitic movement in order to compromise the present government. Several officials in the Maniu cabinet have already charged that the wave of anti-Semitism is being instigated and supported by the Liberals.

Minister of Education Costacescu today issued an order forbidding students to participate in political demonstrations or meetings on pain of being expelled from school.

In the meantime reports from various parts of the country tell of a new flood of Cuzist propaganda. Anti-Semitic leaflets are being distributed on the trains running from Bucharest to Czernowitz. In the cafes of Bucharest followers of Professor Cuza are openly handing out anti-Semitic literature which calls on the populace to kill the Jews and threatens those who protect the Jews. It is being pointed out today that for some strange reason the Cuzists are the only people who have the right to sell literature on the trains, others being prohibited from such sales.

Noah Benonin, Jewish editor of the Russian daily “Bessarabskoye Slovo”, which is published in Kishinev, was arrested today while on a visit to Bucharest, and exiled to Craiova, in Southwestern Roumania. His paper is anti-Maniu.
