With a stinging rebuke to companies that deface labels of country of origin on imported goods, Judge William Bondy in United States Southern District Court yesterday fined the Atlas Hardware Company, 105 Chambers Street, $750 for destroying the “made in Germany” label on a gas pilot light and substituting the label “de luxe.”
Judge Bondy, in fining the company, declared that he wished the person responsible for the act was in court so that he might jail him.
The maximum fine under the act, Section 304-D of the Tariff Law of 1930, is $1,000. Louis Fisdel is president of the Atlas Company. The case was prosecuted by Edward Shears on complaint of the Customs Department.
