Ceremonies in commemoration of the first anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly were held here this week-end at Carnegie Hall. A concert and speeches by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, chairman of the U.N. Human Rights Commission; Brig. Gen. Carlos P. Romulo, president of the General Assembly and U.N. Secretary General Trygve Lie marked the occasion.
Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee, issued a statement on the occasion of the anniversary of the Declaration declaring that:
“This United Nations Human Rights Day signifies the forward march of all humanity toward a world of greater freedom, happiness and opportunity. Together with freedom-loving people everywhere, we join in the hope that each subsequent celebration of this event will bring added reason for rejoicing in mankind’s progress toward the goal of peace and dignity for all.”
