A German news agency which provides news to all daily newspapers in West Germany will open an office in Israel within the next few days, it was announced here today. The news agency–known as DPA–has appointed Rudolf Kuester-meier as its representative in Israel. He will be the first German journalist assigned to cover news in Israel.
German newspaper circles and Jewish leaders here alike welcomed the appointment of Mr. Kuestermeier, who is rated the best possible man for the job and certain to improve the deficient German press coverage of Israeli news.
The correspondent, a founder with Erich Lueth of the “Peace with Israel” movement, spent most of the Hitler period in jails and concentration camps because of his defiance of the Nazi regime. After his liberation, he met a Bergen-Belsen Jewish survivor from Kovno, Fanny Walowic. They were married and now have a daughter, 10.
