The first international conference of the United Jewish Educational and Cultural Organizations since its formation a year ago opened here today with representatives in attendance from Britain, France, the United States, ?unmania, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Greece and Palestine. The meeting will continue for one week.
All the speakers stressed the importance of rehabilitating Jewish cultural life in Europe side by side with physical reconstruction. It was reported that the ?DC and the Jewish Agency have jointly erected schools in DP Camps where 10,000 Jewish children are being educated. Maurice Wagner, secretary of UJECO, reporting on its first year of activity, said that books and teaching materials were badly needed.
Speakers included Dr. Israel Rappaport, director of the American Jewish Committee-sponsored Research Institute in American Jewish Education, Rene Cassin of the Alliance Israelite, Dr. Moshe Sneh of the Jewish Agency, N.S. Lewin of the Jewish national Council of Palestine, and other speakers representing the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Anglo-Jewish Association and several other bodies.
