Justice Samuel Freedman has been appointed Chief Justice of Manitoba. He will be the first Jewish Provincial Chief Justice in Canada’s history. The new Chief Justice will succeed C. Rhodes Smith, who is retiring at the age of 75. Justice Freedman, born in Zhitomir, Russia, 62 years ago, came to Canada with his parents at the age of three. He was named to the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench in 1952 and to the Manitoba Court of Appeals in 1960, and served as the Chancellor of the University of Manitoba. The newly appointed Chief Justice has long been active in the fields of Jewish education, involved with the local committees dealing with The Hebrew University, and in Jewish and pro-Israel activities. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
