The first recognized synagogue to be established in Spain since the Jews were exiled in 1492 was opened here today with 30 members present who will form the first official Jewish community in Spain. A representative of the Spanish police was also present and he announced and signed the draft of the constitution for the community and recorded its establishment.
Ignacio Bauer, a local banker, was elected president of the community in recognition of his personal endeavors to obtain the legalization of the community and for obtaining a plot for a Jewish cemetery despite the objections of church officials. Bauer also undertook the financial responsibility for maintaining the synagogue which is located in the central section of Madrid.
The synagogue has a library adjoining it where a number of old religious articles collected from government museums and private collections are housed.
