The first settlement on newly reclaimed land of the former Huleh swamp was inaugurated yesterday at Tel Zammul in the northeastern corner of the development region. A United Nations observation post on the Israel-Syrian border was formerly located on the settlement site.
The settlers are members of Nahal, a paramilitary youth organization whose members are trained to farm and to defend themselves. Named Notera–“watchman”–the settlement has vast fertile lands linked by road with nearby settlements. A waterline brings sufficient water for personal use and the planting of vegetables.
