Midland’s first synagogue will open here in September for the High Holy Days in a building that formerly served as a church. Newly established Temple Beth El will have its own spiritual leader, Rabbi Marc Samuels, of New York, a graduate of the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Until recently, Midland’s Jewish community was so small that its members journeyed to nearby Bay City for religious services. The expansion of the Dow Chemical Company, however, brought a number of Jewish scientists, physicists and engineers to the city, most of them young and with small children, bringing the Jewish community up to 60 families.
