Sixty-one Jewish refugees in flight from war threatened Shanghai arrived at Tokyo last night in the first phase of an emergency air evacuation by which it is hoped to rescue 320 Jewish men, women and children who have been living in the Chinese port city for the past ten years, the Joint Distribution Committee reported today.
The refugees are bound for Canada. Sponsoring the movement, which has been named “Operation Flying Dragon,” are the J.D.C., the International Refugee Organization, and the Canadian Jewish Congress, The first flight is expected to be followed by five others. The planes are scheduled to fly across the Pacific Ocean via Japan, the Aleutians and Alaska, debarking at Everett Field, Seattle. From there the refugees will travel by bus to Vancouver. Transportation costs are being shared by the J.D.C. and I.R.O.
