Miss Anne X. Alpern, the first woman Attorney General of Pennsylvania, today became the first woman appointee to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Miss Alpern, in private life the widow of Irwin A. Swiss, a Pittsburgh lawyer, was named to the state’s highest court by Gov. David A. Lawrence.
After serving as Pittsburgh’s first woman city solicitor for 11 years, Miss Alpern won both the Republican and Democratic nominations to the Allegheny (Pittsburgh) Common Pleas Court in 1953. Elected, she served five years of a 10 year term, resigning to become Gov. Lawrence’s Attorney General when he took office on Jan. 20, 1959. She received her law degree from the Pittsburgh University Law School.
