Rep. Hamilton Fish, Jr. (R.NY) said today he will introduce a sense-of-Congress resolution next Thursday, two days after the fall season begins, asserting that the Soviet Union and its leaders should be “condemned for creating a class of slaves in the 20th century” through imposition of high fees on educated emigrants.
In a telephone conversation with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency from his home in Millbrook upstate, Fish said the resolution “deplores this action” by the Soviets, which he called “ransom.” The measure has 19 other co-sponsors.
Fish added that his “first order of business” on returning to Washington will be to “reevaluate our trade policy in the light of this action by the Soviet Union.” with a view to possible American “reprisals.” Asked to elaborate, he said that at this point his intention was just to “take a good hard look” at this country’s trade agreements with the USSR.
The Congressman was scheduled to attend a meeting this afternoon in Harrison–outside his district–at the home of Ernest Goldblum, chairman of the Westchester Conference on Soviet Jewry. He was to be formally commended there for participating in the April 30 Solidarity Day rally in New York, for which support he has already received a plaque from the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry.
