In an effort to eliminate abuses in the fish industry and prevent strikes such as the one which tied up the Peck Slip market all last week, representatives of wholesalers and retailers met at 36 Peck Slip Saturday and voted to send committees to confer with Harlan Amen, special assistant federal attorney general, today or tomorrow.
The wholesalers and retailers agreed that a fair price scale could be reached by mutual consent without outside interference. At Saturday’s meeting, abuses in the industry were discussed, and, although no definite decision was reached, Harold L. Straus, chairman of the meeting, reported that the industry was on its way to a better understanding.
Straus, who is a member of the firm of Straus and Osserman, counsel to the wholesalers, represented the wholesalers’ newly formed association, while Sam Walpole represented the new retailers’ union.
Stanley Osserman, who returned from Washington, where he is working on a NRA code for the industry, reported progress. He said that it will be at least two or three months before the code will be ready for submission to the NRA authorities. Osserman left for Washington late last night.
