Five Jewish refugees received bayonet wounds in a clash between French military police and 506 Polish Jews seeking to proceed from the American zone of Austria to Marseilles via the French zone last week. Three of the wounded Jews were taken to a hospital in Salzburg, while the remainder of the party was sent to a camp in the French zone of Germany.
The clash occurred at the border town of Bregenz when the French guards questioned the validity of the Bolivian passports which the refugees presented. The Jews also had French transit visas. The train with the 500 Jews was surrounded by military guards and forced to remain at Bregenz for a week. During this time the refugees were forced to live in dilapidated drafty coaches and received a limited food ration sent by the Joint Distribution Committee from Innsbruck.
