The rains subsided in the country today, but some areas in the southern region were still in danger from flood waters continuing to pour down from the hills. Residents of the Bet Shikma settlement, who were evacuated two days ago during the heaviest rain and who were returned to the settlement yesterday morning, were evacuated again last night when flood waters rose again to a danger point. A number of old dwellings in Safad were destroyed by the storm.
The first casualties of Israel’s current floods were recorded today near Ashkelor. where two soldiers were drowned when the army truck in which they were riding was inundated by flood waters last night. Rescue teams, using searchlights and aided by helicopters, searched through the night after the two soldiers were reported missing but the bodies were not found until this morning.
