The first of four weekly programs of the Fokine Ballet will be given tomorrow (Monday) and Tuesday night at the Lewisohn Stadium of City College, it was announced Friday. The program consists of three ballets by Michel Fokine: “Adventures of Harlequin,” a choreographic comedy to music by Beethoven; “Le Spectre de la Rose,” a romantic ballet to music by Weber and the Polovetzkian Dances from Borodin’s opera, Prince Igor.
The leading role in “Harelquin” will be played by Vitale Fokine, son of Michel. “The Spectre de la Rose” is the most famous of Fokine’s creations and will star Paul Haakon, who is new to Stadium audiences. Winona Bimboni, Edna Veralle and Harold Haskin will have leading roles in the “Polovetzkian Dances.” Alexander Smallens will conduct the orchestra, and will also direct two orchestral numbers, Weber’s “Euryanthe” overture and the “Prince Igor” overture.
Jose Iturbi will be back on the podium Wednesday night with a program of Schubert, Mendelssohn, Debussy and Beethoven classics. Gounod’s opera, “Faust,” will be presented Thursday and Friday with Armand Tokatyan, Leon Rothier and Maria Kurenko in the leading roles.
