Following on the heels of the assurances given by Reich Sports Commissar Captain Hans von Tschammer und Osten to General Charles H. Sherrill, American member of the International Olympic Committee, that there would be no discrimination against Jewish athletes, Captain von Tschammer today prohibited Jewish athletes from wearing the Reich sports pin label, the insignia of the German sportsmen.
The sports leader’s assurances were given in a letter to General Sherrill in which he said he had invited Miss Helene Mayer, Jewish fencing star, and Miss Greta Bergmann, Jewish high-jumper to represent Germany in the Olympics. Miss Mayer is at present in Oakland, Cal. Miss Bergmann is in Stuttgart, Germany.
Last August 5 Miss Bergmann was barred from the Wuertemberg Olympic tryouts in Stuttgart because of her Jewish blood.
