The Ford Foundation will assist in financing the training of vocational school instructors for Israel at the Central ORT Teachers Training Institute in Switzerland, it was announced today by Dr. William Haber, president of the American ORT. Dr. Haber was notified by H. Rowan Gaither, Jr. director of the Ford Foundation, of the decision to grant $44,000 to support the training costs for Israeli students.
Purpose of the Ford Foundation grant is to increase the number of qualified teaching personnel for trade schools in Israel, Dr. Haber explained. ORT operates the largest non-governmental system of trade schools in Israel, maintaining 28 schools with an annual enrollment of 3,000 students. The Central ORT Institute was established by the World ORT Union in 1949 to help meet the teacher shortage of the 270 ORT schools located in 19 countries. The Joint Distribution Committee, a member agency of the United Jewish Appeal, supplies the largest proportion of American funds for this program.
