President Ford said last night that unless the Palestinians recognize the State of Israel there will be no progress towards peace in the Mideast. Answering a question on the Palestinian issue at a press conference at the White House. Ford said:
“It certainly is a very important part of the problem because the Palestinians do not recognize the State of Israel and under the circumstances it’s impossible to bring the Palestinians and the Israeli together to negotiate, So unless there is some change in their attitude, I think you can see a very serious roadblock exists.”
Replying to another question on a report that the U.S. assured Israel that it need to make only “cosmetic” territorial changes on the Golan Heights, the President said.” That is pure speculation and we do hope that the process of negotiation will continue in the Mideast and I hope and trust that we can get the parties together for a just and permanent peace.”
