Concluding an article on the Jews of Eastern Europe in the January issue of Foreign Affairs. Desider Kiss, foreign editor of the Pester Lloyd of Budapest, sees anti-Semitism there “as incapable of destroying these Jewish masses as were the systematic persecutions they underwent in past centuries.”
Mr. Kiss, presenting a statistical-descriptive view of East European Jewries, country by country, declares their situation, except in Russia, “must be painted in somber colors.”
Adverse effects upon Jews generally of the trend to cooperatives, which have deprived small Jewish retailers and middlemen of their livelihoods, and the policy in many countries of shifting tax burdens to commerce and industry in favor of the peasantry, are stressed by Mr. Kiss.
