Announcing the ratification of a new French-Lebanese financial treaty, Foreign Minister Georges Bidault today defended the shipment of arms and military equipment to Lebanon.

The Lebanon, he said, was mandated to France for 25 years, during which time French arms and military stores were supplied to the Lebanese Government regularly. It would not be “normal,” he declared, for France to halt the shipment of such sup-plies at this time.

(A dispatch from Damascus quoted Syrian Prime Minister Jamil Mardam Bey as saying today that “Syria has decided to liquidate all relations with France, monetary and otherwise.” He added that the Arabs resented “French pro-Jewish maneuvers.”)
