Foreign Minister Christian Pineau proposed in a statement here that France should act as mediator between Israel and the Arab States. He said that the problems involved were extremely delicate but he had not lost hope that the way could be found to a peaceful settlement.

France, he said, would act within the framework of the tripartite agreement, or within a Four-Power framework if the three Western partners were joined in this by the Soviet Union. He warned that “the outbreak of war in the Middle East could have incalculable consequences for world peace.”
