The Foreign Ministry has set up a new department “to maintain liaison with the Jewish communities abroad.” it was announced here today. The department’s first head is Max Varon, a veteran diplomat, former Jewish National Fund official and an experienced fund-raiser. Varon has served as Ambassador to Burma, Cambodia and Sweden, and most recently headed the Ministry’s Asia and Oceania division.
Prior to his foreign service work, he served with the JNF and has carried out fund-raising missions for the United Jewish Appeal, Israel Bonds and other organizations. He is well-known in Jewish communities abroad. Among his department’s roles will be increasing cooperation between the government, World Zionist Organization and Jewish organizations abroad.
The department’s creation, according to an official statement, “reflects the recognition that Israel’s needs and struggles have deepened the ‘centrality of Israel’ in the consciousness and the lives of Jewish communities…especially since the Yom Kippur War.”
