The Foreign Office reiterated today that no British spokesman here or at the United Nations has been authorized to state that Britain will not carry out the recommendations of the U.N. on Palestine unless they are satisfactory.
A spokesman told correspondents this morning that Lord Hall, the former Colonial Minister, had not received official sanction for his statement in the House of Lorde on Wednesday to the effect that Britain would observe the recommendations only if it approved of them. He called the correspondent’s attention to the latter part of Hall’s statement: “Wait and see,” and again denied that the government was not prepared to heed the U.N. decisions.
The Revisionist newspaper Jewish Standard today appeared with the lead column on its front page blank. An editorial note on the top of the column, entitled “Freedom of the Press?” explained that the typesetters had refused to set the article which condemned the hanging of Dov Gruner and three other Palestinian Jews.
