The steamship Mala, formerly the American Presidential yacht Mayflower, arrived today in Haifa with a group of European refugees. U.N. observers immediately boarded her to supervise the debarkation of the immigrants.
The ship, which served American Presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Herbert Hoover, flew the Panamanian flag as she entered the harbor. Reports from Marseilles said that the ship set sail from there secretly and that the Panamanian consulate would revoke its charter for that reason.
Two of five Britons recently arrested by the Irgun and turned over to the Government on charges of espionage in Jerusalem for the Arabs were today formally charged under the British Official Secrets Act with having obtained and published information about Israeli defenses of value to the enemy. Their trial will be held in a Jerusalem court Sept. 13. The other three Britons were released several weeks ago for lack of conclusive evidence.
