Asher Schwartz, a leading journalist who formerly headed the Tel Aviv bureau of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, died Saturday after a long illness, at the age of 79
Schwartz, a nationally known Israel Radio reporter, was JTA’s Tel Aviv bureau chief from the 1950s until his retirement in 1970. At that time, JTA contracted with Itim, Israel’s domestic news wire service, to distribute its incoming news to the Israeli press and electronic media, which had been one of Schwartz’s responsibilities.
Schwartz was among the founders of the Tel Aviv Journalists Association and a familiar figure at Beit Sokolov, the journalists club in Tel Aviv.
