Former Prime Minister Shimon Peres gave his support for the creation of a Palestinian state during a speech before the Palestinian legislative council. “It is our deep hope that the Palestinians will gain independence,” he said in what was the first speech by an Israeli before the self-rule government’s legislature. Members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government said Peres’ remarks are harmful to the peace process and called on the current leader of the Labor Party, Ehud Barak, to make his stand on the issue clear.
