Franz Josef Swidensky, 55, went on trial Friday in Dusseldorf accused of shooting and beating to death an unknown number of inmates at the Treblinka concentration camp during World War II. Swidensky is a former Soviet Army soldier who was taken prisoner by the Nazis and then served as watchman in Treblinka where his victims are said to have been Polish and Jewish prisoners.
