Forty ex-DP’s, who left Israel within the past few months and came to Germany, boarded a vessel for Brazil today under HIAS auspices. They belonged to the group of 150 Jewish “returnees” whose male members were arrested in the recent German police raid on Munich’s main Orthodox DP syngagogue, and were sentenced to brief jail terms for illegal entry. HIAS hopes to arrange for the emigration of similar groups to South America in December and January.
The so-called “semi-legal returnees”–those who were accorded the six-month period of grace–now receive relief grants from the Bavarian State. They amount to the equivalent of $11 a month for an individual, $17 for a married couple and $7 for each child under 16. These sums are supplemented by grants from the Joint Distribution Committee, which is marking Chanukah with a distribution of clothing.
