Little may be expected of American Jews toward lifting politically Europe’s Jewry to its feet again, in the opinion of Ab Cohan, editor of the Jewish Daily “Forward”, of New York, who is now in Berlin.
In reply to the question if European Jewry could continue to count in the future on material and political aid from the Jews of America, Mr. Cahan said:
“So far as the political aid is concerned, this was in my opinion a dream from the very beginning. I do not believe that it will be more successful in the future.
“Unfortunately the prospects for material aid are but little better. The native born American Jews have shown an inexplicable indifference towards European Jewry. Only the workers, the Jewish masses, and the Jews of German origin, so-called “German Yahudim”, have displayed an amazing amount of brotherly self-sacrifice. But now they toe have become exhausted.”
The strongest impression he had received in Europe, Mr. Cahan said, was that of the fight against the reactionary movement in Bavaria. Karl Auer, the Social Democratic leader in Bavaria, often erroneously reported as a Jew, had told him that 4000 Bavarian workers were organized to fight against the National Socialist (Fascisti) peril.
