Four Russian Jewish activists who failed yesterday to appear as ordered for active duty in the Soviet Army Reserves, were arrested today in the home of Vladimir Slepak, it was reported by the National Conference on Soviet Jewry. The four were Victor Yakhout, Mikhail Kliatchkin, Leonid Tsypin and Aleksander Slepak.
According to the NCSJ, militiamen arrived at the Slepak residence in Moscow this evening and took the four activists away. They had been in hiding since last weekend. Aleksander Slepak was released but the others were detained. These three were taken to their respective induction centers, the NCSJ reported.
In the past few weeks a total of 27 Jewish activists have been ordered to report for active duty, but 14, including the four arrested, went into hiding. A warning was issued last weekend that failure to report yesterday for active duty would result in a seven-year prison sentence in Siberia.
