Four British policemen narrowly escaped death today when the automobile in which they were driving was blown up on a Tel Aviv street.
The car was hurled through the air for a distance of several yards and was completely wrecked, but the four, members of the Criminal Investigation Division, suffered only minor injuries. The explosion was caused by an electrically detonated landmine.
Meanwhile, several score Jewish policemen from Tel Aviv have been transferred to the Sarona police unit and have been assigned to mobile and night patrols. The authorities apparently hope to avoid extremist attacks on the police by exposing a number of Jews to the same dangers as the non-Jewish policemen.
Twelve hundred Jewish refugees who arrived in Palestine on the blockade runner Latrun and were later deported to Cyprus returned to the Holy Land today. A baby was born during the 200-mile journey from Famagusta to Haifa.
An Arab constable was fatally wounded last night in Eaifa by two unidentified Arabs. The motives for the murder are unknown.
