The Soviet Union’s criticism of the Tripartite Declaration yesterday was termed “unjustified” today in official French circles, which insisted that the declaration never had any other purpose than the safeguarding of. Middle East peace and respecting the independence and sovereignty of the states in that part of the world.

The declaration, these circles added, had made its contribution to the maintenance of that peace. It foresees action by the three powers in the event of need “within the framework of the United Nations whose fundamental principles inspired the French Government” in its attitude toward the problems of the region.
