France intends to openly support the Arab stand at the forthcoming session of the General Assembly. French political sources said here today that France will support the Jordanian-American resolution in the Security Council and will come out in support of the Egyptian stand at the General Assembly. These decisions must still be approved, however, by President Georges Pompidou. The sources said that in the Security Council, France’s position will be relatively easy; it will align itself with the American stand which has a strong basis since the Security Council has already unanimously adopted a resolution on Jerusalem, sources said. The General Assembly situation will be more complex. It is expected that Foreign Minister Maurice Schumann will adopt, in France’s name, the more extreme of these positions as represented by Egypt and the Soviet Union. France’s stand is, basically, quite close to the views of Egypt and the Soviet Union as Paris believes that Israel, and Israel alone, is to be blamed for the stalemate in the Mideastern situation. France also believes, together with Egypt and Russia, that a solution can only be obtained through a joint Big Four decision on the subject. Schumann is thus expected, according to sources, to press for a renewed Big Four initiative in this matter as a “last measure to stop a renewal of hostilities.”
