The French Foreign Ministry has ordered that all government officials expedite issuance of transit visas for the temporary admission of migrants who can give satisfactory evidence of their final destinations, it was reported here today by David J. Schweitzer, financial director of the HIAS European Office, who arrived here for a short visit.
Schweitzer also reported that emigrants who are stranded in France because of shipping delays may obtain extensions of their short-term visas until suitable transportation is available. He lauded the arrangement under which HIAS and the Jewish Agency work together in the field of immigration. During the war years Schweitzer established a HIAS office in Istanbul which has since organized the repatriation of many refugees who found a haven in Turkey.
