Israel has accepted the final draft of an extradition treaty just submitted by the French Government, a spokesman for the Israel Foreign Ministry announced today.
After the pact is signed, within the next few days, Israel will have to make a formal decision on the French request for the surrender of Joseph Janovici wanted by the French police on charges of alleged fraud and currency manipulations. If Israel agrees, it will have to go to court for a ruling on whether Mr. Janovici, who arrived from Morocco under an assumed name, shall be surrendered.
Israel and France first came to a preliminary agreement on an extradition agreement in 1956. Subsequent French amendments had been approved and signed by Israel last July. Since then the entire matter has been hanging fire at the French Foreign Ministry.
