French Premier Felix Gaillard said today in an interview released here by U. S. News and World Report that there should be a “joint declaration that the United States, Britain and France will not permit any modification of the political status quo in the Middle East.”
He indicated that this was desirable as a joint policy for the three Western powers to adopt for the Arab world prior to a big power conference with the Russians. He said that in the event of another instance of internal subversion on the Syrian pattern the three Western powers should “oppose it.” He was “convinced that the simple fact of saying this would prevent it.”
Asked if he advocated a new Tripartite Declaration that would come into play in the event of internal subversion such as recently occurred in Syria, he said: “I believe that, at present, there are only two forms of war–there is war by internal subversion, and there is the big war of destruction. There are no others. To refuse to recognize one of these forms, that of internal subversion, is to leave the field tree for our adversary.”
(The Belgian Socialist Party last night adopted a resolution calling for an arms embargo on the Middle East and international guarantees for the independence and territorial integrity of all countries in the Middle East.)
