Leading members of the Knesset yesterday called for energetic action by Israel in the areas of diplomatic contacts and appeals to world public opinion in an effort to prevent France from supplying Iraq the wherewithal to build atomic weapons. A senior intelligence official gave the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee an informed assessment that, if the Franco-Iraqi deals go through as intended, Iraq will be in possession of nuclear weapons by the middle of the decode.
Farmer Premier Yitzhak Rabin, a committee member, called for urgent action by Israel to persuade France not to supply Iraq with the enriched uranium intended to fuel the two nuclear reactors already supplied to Baghdad. Rabin said he did not doubt an effort of this kind was already being mounted but he wanted more intensive attempts.
