Dr. Walter Leiske, mayor of Frankfurt, was one of the principal speakers at a memorial meeting here for the late Dr. Leo Baeck, former chief rabbi of Berlin and chairman of the Union of Jews in Germany during the Hitler period. Dr. Baeck, leader of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, died last month in London.
West German President Theodor Heuss sent a personal message to the meeting, which was arranged by the Central Council of Jews in Germany. In his message, read by Prof. Huebinger, a high government official in Bolin, the President recalled Rabbi Baeck’s deportation to the Teresinstadt concentration camp and his magnificent attitude” there.
