Two fraternity chapters on the Williams College campus here announced this weekend that, by the time the college opens for classes next September, they will have freed themselves of discriminatory practices in regard to electing new members. Thirteen of the 15 fraternity chapters at Williams College have already filed statements asserting that they are “free to elect to membership any individual on the basis of his merit as a person.”
The two fraternities preparing to make Williams College fraternity membership 100 percent without bias are Phi Delta Theta and Phi Gamma Delta. The local officers of the first notified college officials this weekend that they will surrender their national charter by August 15, unless their national organization permits them to elect members without bias. Officers of Phi Gamma Delta said they will turn their chapter into a “local” fraternity by next September, freeing themselves of the national organization’s discriminatory policy.
