The United States Government believes that freedom of passage through the Suez Canal is “consistent with the wishes of the United Nations” and applicable to Israel, a spokesman for the U. S. delegation declared here today.
A proposal that the United Nations set up a 25,000-man police force for the Middle East was put forward here by Senator Hubert Humphrey yesterday. Sen. Humphrey, who is a member of the American delegation to the United Nations, made the suggestion at a luncheon of the American Friends of the Hebrew University.
The Senator also urged a UN embargo on all arms shipments to the area-during the UN patrol, freedom of shipping for Israel vessels in the Suez Canal, an all-out attack on the Arab refugee problem, a UN economic aid program for the area, acceptance of a regional Jordan River project, and the construction of a new canal route across Israel. He added that at should be made clear that Israel’s independence and territorial integrity is a “matter of U. S. policy with high priority.”
