Other Jewish communities in Algiers also were alarmed by the Setif outbreak and the greatest uneasiness prevailed in Jewish circle. Jewish groups were particularly uneasy in view of the failure of French authorities last July to take adequate steps to guard the Jewish population.
MOSLEMS EXCITED
A similar unrest was evident in the Moslem districts of the city and experienced observers agreed that any untoward incident would bring tragedy in its wake.
Scenes of horrible brutality were enacted in the Constantine pogrom of last July, in which forty Jews lost their lives and more than 100 were wounded. The Jewish district was looted and burned to the ground. Whole families were wiped out by the Mohammedan mobs and children and young Jewish girls were mutilated and killed.
