The French delegation to the United Nations will vote in favor of the United Arab Republic’s candidacy for the UN Security Council, official sources stated here today. The Government was said to be basing itself on an unwritten “gentleman’s agreement” at the UN, according to Security Council representation on a geographical basis.
While Government officials “do not relish” having the UAR as a colleague on the Council, the sources said that no other candidate for this forthcoming Security Council vacancy has come forth from any other member in the Middle East area. Officials drew attention to the Security Council rule providing that a member of the Council is not entitled to a vote on an issue in which this member is directly involved.
