The belief that there may be an improvement in the situation of the Rumanian Jews was expressed today by Foreign Minister Georges Bonnet of France to a delegation of the World Jewish Congress executive committee comprising Dr. Nahum Goldmann of Geneva and Marc Jarblum of Paris.
M. Bonnet said he based his belief on conversations that he and British Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax had with Foreign Minister Nicolas Peterscu-Comnen of Rumania. It was understood that in the course of the conversations the British and French Ministers expressed special concern regarding the revision of Jewish citizenship proceeding in Rumania and advised M. Petrescu-Comnen to impress his Government with the need of exercising moderation on the Jewish question.
The Rumanian delegation appeared highly satisfied today that Jewish organizations had not pressed for consideration of their petitions against Rumania at the present League of Nations Council session. The Jewish delegations left Geneva tonight.
While no specific action on the petitions will be taken before the Council’s September session, M. Bonnet assured the Jewish delegation that the Committee of Three named on the minority question would watch developments closely and would definitely meet the Rumanian delegation before the end of the present session.
