A spokesman of the French Foreign Office today authorized the Jewish Telegraphic Agency to deny a report from London that the French Government is releasing the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem from house arrest, under which he has been held since the fall of the Nazi regime and his surrender to the French military authorities in Germany.
“You can officially deny that the ex-Mufti is being released from house arrest. His status remains unchanged,” the French official said.
The ex-Mufti is being held incommunicado in a Paris suburb. The London report said that the news that he was supposed to have been released today came “from good authority.”
