The National Assembly’s rules committee has rejected an opposition bill proposing the creation of a committee to investigate the use of Mirage planes sold by France to Libya. Rules committee chairman Jean Foyer said last week that the government stands by the May 2 statement of Foreign Minister Michel Jobert that “Nothing allows us to conclude that our agreements with Libya have been violated.”
Israel had charged that a number of the Mirages had been transferred from Libya to Egypt in violation of the sales agreement which specified that the war planes were not to be transferred to a third power.
Foyer said the proposed committee, to be effective, would have to work on foreign soil. “As international law makes this impossible, the committee, even if created, would be unable to fulfill its mission,” he said.
