The Government of France is in sympathy with the spirit of the Middle East peace proposals made by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles last Friday and hopes that the “perspective” opened by these proposals will receive the approval of the interested nations. This statement was made in an official communique issued by the Foreign Office last night.
The communique said that the proposals were of a “nature which can cool off the atmosphere, prevent renewal of bloody incidents and permit the Near East states to concentrate their activities and resources on peaceful productive enterprises.” The French Government will study the proposals which refer to “complex questions and which have been for France herself the subject of constant preoccupation for many years,” it added. Finally, the Foreign Ministry pointed out that the goals of the Dulles plan are the same to which France is pledged, “notably that which concerns the reinforcement of guarantees offered by the Tripartite Declaration.”
